Biography
Music began for me seriously at a fairly old age. As a kid I wasn't surrounded by music a lot. My family wasn't very musical: Dad listened to radio only - rarely did he pick on any records, as Mum did sometimes. She played occasional piano as well. The main musical influence to me was coming from my brother who was a great music consumer. He also had a drum set in the garage next to my room and later on at his band-camp. There's a saying: "From a father to a son." In this case it goes: "From a brother to a brother." The rhythmic side of drumming and the constant noise coming from the garage probably went into my consciousness somehow. My grandmother told me stories about putting some pots and boxes for me to hit, but it wasn't until my mid-teens when I started to take drumming seriously. This was due to my joining to my first band which ended up being named Neverend - it exists still at this very moment, and it's my second serious band.
When I was on seventh grade, my friend brought Korn's Blind to a music lesson in school. That was when my own musical taste started to form. I borrowed the CD right away and soon all the other ones. From Korn I moved to Limp Bizkit and to a great variety of music from my brother's collections. It didn't take long from that when Dream Theater was introduced to me, which was a real spark and influence for my progressive direction, in playing and listening. Through Dream Theater I found my favorite band to date, Rush. Other bands among the two just mentioned are heavy metal groups like Strapping Young Lad, more mellow The Devin Townsend Band (Devin and his work has probably inspired me in the most childish and primitive way a band can inspire: after I've listened to it, I've just simply wanted to play and create something as great as he has done. The level of enthusiasm and emotion he has reached in me has been the biggest of all I dare to say - it's great to find bands at this age that still inspire you in such a straight way), Akercocke, Opeth, which have all imprinted their marks on me permanently.
Since I'm the lyricist of the band, I feel obliged to talk about it. Before the band was formed, no-one was quite sure who was going to start writing lyrics. I had no idea I had any potential, and so the first lyrics were written by Kari. After some time I decided to give it a shot - I had some old jottings in my virtual notebook somewhere on my computer. I somehow managed to put them in shape, which was the start for more continous lyric-writing.
Words have attracted me ever since I found my greatest influence, Neil Peart, who happens to be, not only a great drummer, but a well-appreciated lyricist of the legendary rock band, Rush. Through him I found inspiration to wider reading of literature and even to lyric-writing.
The range of subjects I've written about has been quite narrow so far. Being at the age I am, I have found growing up to be the most essential thing at this point of my life. It arouses both excitement and fear. You have to start taking responsibility; you have to look after yourself, you have to make serious decisions. Simple and natural things, but occasionally it all tends to become very remarkable and overwhelming in the eyes of a growing and changing individual who aims for independency. I grew up in a way where life was disillusioned to me. I'd imagined it much nicer than it really is. Plus the things that happened around my most sensitive time of growing weren't the sweetest things in existence. (It all kind of summed up, and I just tried to process that in my mind.) It was extremely hard for me to face.
