NIGHTWISH Mainman Tuomas Holopainen's Income More Than Doubles In One Year!

According to Keskisuomalainen, NIGHTWISH mainman/keyboardist/composer Tuomas Holopainen earned more than double last year compared with 2007. Holopainen's taxable income last year was 379, 210 euros. In 2007, the amount was 185, 934 euros. In September 2007 the Finns released their successful Dark Passion Play album, with sales figures approaching one million worldwide. The band's nearly two-year world tour ended in September at Helsinki's Hartwall Arena.

If it's true, then congratulations to Tuomas. Regardless of how anyone may feel about him, it is a fact that he earned his money with his own efforts and merits, which makes him way more valuable than most rich people I know.

That information is free for public viewing here in Finland. Yes, you can actually check how much your neighbor earns. It's a huge buzz going on atm because they just released the new annual figures, and you see articles of it everywhere here, because we don't have decent newspapers here, they're all bullshit. One of them is iltalehti, (evening paper) and first there's the big news about the tax-lists, and then something about f1, and then there's "Lindsay Lohan was partying hard!" Now what kind of news is that?! Then there's more tax-information scheisse and somebody got fired and some more tax-information stuff and then we have "the wedding picture of the year"... And that's pretty much the most decent journalism we get in our language. Fucking yay!

I'd doubt it. I'd believe Tarja earns more money (I know I gave her a lot of mine :P), and anyway I can't see how that would affect her, given that money doesn't seem too big of a deal for her and I'd say she's well off with her present income.

Most normal metal band members have regular jobs too...I remember that Johan Hegg of Amon Amarth(which is a famous band,imagine now about underground bands)has a regular job as a truck driver...

By the way, a piano contest Tuomas vs. Tarja would be so funny. Tarja's teachers have always said that she is so talented that she could have become a professional classical pianist, and she used to play really difficult Chopin études, virtuoso pieces, though of course she hasn't been practicing on that level for a long time and can't play them anymore. But I wouldn't be surprised if she STILL proved the better pianist of the two. :-p

I won't comment on your opinion about Tarja's album,since it's your opinion and you can think whatever you want.Just remember that many people find it very good.

Anyway,on topic:of course it matters!It matters when someone is trying to convince others how much of a great keyboard player Tuomas is or how good bass player+singer Marco is.
It also matters when supposedly Tuomas writes better music BUT he sucks at playing keyboard,since it been more than a decade since he released an album that shows any talent in playing keyboards(Oceanborn),he has stopped practicing and he can't even play his own simple melodies now(Ever Dream for example).

And no one "suggested" it.Her teachers were pretty clear about that.And to inform you that one of her teachers was Tuomas' mother.
Also,i was in a concert of hers recently and she played piano during singing one song...And let me tell you,as an old piano player:she was perfect.Especially because she was singing at the same time,which is a shit of hard thing to do.Tupas can't even do one.

I remember Eddie Trunk once saying: "If your little sister was found with a Metallica album, you probably wouldn't like metal anymore."

If a band started making loads of money, there would always be some section of the metal world decrying them as sellouts simply for the value printed on their check. Are metalheads that selfish? What would happen if metal went mainstream? How many hardcore fans would leave the genre because it's not their rebel thing anymore or because they think that it's all about the money now? It's happened on a band scale, but what about an entire genre?

Dee Snider once said it best: "If there is a secret fear that metal fans have, it's that they are afraid that their favorite band will be SUCCESSFUL."

The thing with the most succesful metal bands and us metalheads hating them, is that in most cases when a metal band starts making serious money, they do not only start making it for the money, they start making music for the wider masses to make more money. Which leads to just crappy mainstream metal. Just look at bands like Metallica, Slipknot (un-metal, but holy shit does the new stuff suck a million times more than their old stuff, which had _some_ balls), Children of Bodom, Lordi (hard rock, but same thing), Norther and Nightwish. The more popular they get, the more they change their very own thing to get more fans. And yes, taxation in Finland is public information. People are curious of how much celebrities/rich people earn and that's why the tabloids are publishing the figures.

IMO, almost 400000 ?/per year/per person is a huge amount of money. There are a lot of hard-working people in other branches who can hardly live with their salaries. So he should be fucking happy.

Tax information is public in Finland so naturally journalists check the income of people they think are interesting. Tuomas Holopainen was checked together with other musicians like Ville Valo (earned little less than Tuomas) and Lauri Ylönen (earned much more than Tuomas). Also guys like Eicca Toppinen and Jouni Hynynen are making a lot of money altough much less than our top tree.

And yes, Tarja's income is in internet as well, it was something over 33 000 euro. But I assume Tarja doesn't pay much of her taxes to Finland so that is not a reliable number.

The reason most real metal artists hate mainstream metal bands isn't the money they make.Everyone wants to make money.
The problem is that they(mainstream bands) don't make it with a decent way,which is writing good music,playing excellent shows and respecting fans.
Most mainstream bands try to gather attention from the media with not so artistic methods and scandals.
This is why,even Iron maiden can be considered mainstream,no metal bands has ever accused them of being "too commercial",because all the money and fame they have is because of hard work and devotion.

Well, she does need better songs for the future, but her voice has improved a lot. Maestro however, does not write songs as well as he used to. There are 4 songs that I personally like from DPP (PATP, MoH, FTHIOH and Eva if you wanna know :) but the rest are nothing special, compared to the old albums where all the songs are good or brilliant. And it doesn't even have anything to do with Anette's voice. If the song is good enough, I can put up with her voice (NOT live though!).

gaby, Tuomas got piano lessons from his mother (at least) and he still plays the instrument, not just keyboards. If you play piano, you can move to keyboards easily, they're even easier to play; for example, rock keyboardists usually play only with one hand (they may do pads with the other, but I wouldn't count that as real accompaniment, and Tuomas uses a lot of support tapes as far as I know). Classical piano playing is a LOT more demanding. So when people go around and declare Tuomas a virtuoso who deserves earning more than just about every other metal musician, or even classical musician, I declare bullshit.

Tuomas deserve all that money but he is far away from these "mega band" millionaires.He also pays high tax from that amount so the state is happy also for that tax money.
Many people don't notice how much money Nightwish spend for everything.Ex. they have put 1 million euros to the DPP album and music videos.They made huge number of concert during this 2 year period and even they got money from these concerts still it's not cheap to travel around the world with a big staff and equipments...all cost...hotels,food,flights,transport...everything!
It's nice if they can get some money back because this is their hard work and they all have to live and pay the bills like everybody else!

Almagest, no instrument is more demanding than another. And classical pianists dont have it so easy moving to keyboards. I have a friend at school who plays Chopin beautifully, but has a lot of problems playing jazz chords, because he is used to playing melodies and reading sheet music,instead of playing chords, and having to improvise.Its all about practice,dedication, and taste, and many pianist that I know absolutely hate playing keyboards, but its good for all keyboard players to learn some classical piano, it helps them with their technic.

And I never said tuomas was a virtuoso or any of that crap, I just say its normal for composers to earn more money. If you read carefully a nightwish cd in the back it normally says: All music and lyrics composed by TH, except nr. 2, etc...so, he gets more money. If its not fair to you....then there really is nothing you can do about it, its just music business. If he deserves it or not, its your personal opinion.

Exactly. For example the bands I mentioned in a previous post, though they have turned to worse IMO, but I still listen to the stuff from them I like. I don't understand what some people are trying to accomplish by not listening to Master of Puppets because they think St. Anger was bad. I'm glad to hear if a good band is making their way to the top, but at the same time I fear that they will change their style and music to please the mass audience.

hmm, I am twice graduated, with very succesfull proffesional carrier. I even made it up to school books, though I am much younger then Princess or Maestro, but yes, in some pretty specialized area of human knowledge managers (even those of foreign companies) learn how to do things based on my example. :-))

When I was last time in London, I celebrated my birthday there... we were (with my boyfriend) few hours in Windsor, did some shoppings in Eton, walked through city, feed some ducks and have some beautiful lunch and a coffee..

We travelled then to see some friends, ride horses... and in the evening on our way back we hired a boat and spent some romantic moments on Thames..

and later on even more romantic moments ... else where. And I have got nice B presents, too.

Just one example ... but I am still not getting why should I be jealous on Princess...

And it is not about London exclusively... I can tell you about my visits in Paris, Amsterdam, Brusel, Luxembourg, Nice, Andorra, Lisabon, Granada, Cordoba, Porto, Burgos, Jerez de la Frontera, etc, etc..

I've seen this band play live with both singers and yeah, Tarja was great in her time, but she's out and for a reason. Anette is good but, it's so ignorant for people to think she can sing the same as Tarja's range even though she tries. She doesn't always make the pitch on her own songs either. DIFFERENT people with different qualities. But, I have never been disappointed with their concerts and the audience didn't seem to either.

It makes no difference who wears makeup, sings crappy live or is METAL or changing to POP. If I don't like it anymore, I MOVE ON. Not constantly whine about it and post vids from youtube to try to prove a useless point.

You people spend way too much time idolizing the negatives about about this band.

I spent 140.00 seeing U2 live and what a waste that was, they were utterly crappy!!! I left the concert feeling pissed off and had to have my ears repaired. Talk about quality and commercialization?

Going back to lurkdom.

Well, she was supposed to be able to sing the same range - and now it is seen that she can't do it at all, in other words she does not cope with her first and most importan duty. So it is no where ignorant to notice that and criticize that. It is not about being different, it is about having poor singing qualities.
And many many people were disappointed with their concerts, and many of them were not even in particular Tarja's fans, were just metal fans and listeners who go to every big or not so big gig in their local areas.

No, it actually matters when singers have bad image on stage, sings not good or inproperly and it also matters when some metal material (old one, in this case) is sung with pop technique with weak voice and that is totally unsuitable for it. There is such thing as criticizing and btw, the point is not useless at all as it is supported with facts :)
And it is also stupid to whine about that criticizm and the fact that people don't blindly drool over anything this band offeres or represents now.

Idolizing negatives? Lol, that's good. There is nothing actually to be idolized when it comes to these negatives, there is just stating them, people just mark them and discuss them, they do not idolize them. Besides, this band started all itself when idolizing and stressing some negative, creating it in the media several years ago.

As I said over on the other thread, I'm sure Spears would make NW look a lot more genuine. Compared to now, that is.

As for the 140 units of whatever currency this 50 cent person (oh no, it was TWO cents only) paid for a U2 concert ... well, complaining afterwards about U2's commercialisation and lack of quality already doesn't make him or her appear like the brightest crayon in the box.

I'm glad Tuomas and Co. get what they deserve. The whole band has been working hard past two years and now it's time to rest and spent more time with those who are your biggest supporters and fans: friends and family. I hope they enjoy their vacation before starting making the next album. :)

Can't wait to hear what twist Tuomas has been planning for the next album.. And Troy's backpipes sound promising, too! :)
