NIGHTWISH Singer ANETTE OLZON Featured On New THE RASMUS Single

NIGHTWISH frontwoman Anette Olzon makes a guest appearance on "October & April", the new single from Finland's THE RASMUS, which is scheduled for release on November 11. The song, which is available for streaming below, has been sent to radio stations in Europe and the video for the track will premiere on October 23.

In a September 2008 interview with Italy's Musica Metal, THE RASMUS singer Lauri Ylönen stated that the idea for the song came to him nine years ago when Tarja Turunen was still the lead singer of NIGHTWISH, but he only got around to recording the track during the sessions for last year's "Black Roses" CD. "I actually asked Tarja, but she said no!" Lauri revealed. "Then I called Anette, and she was like, 'Yeah, I would love to sing a song with you, I'm a big RASMUS fan, actually two years ago before I joined NIGHTWISH, I was singing THE RASMUS songs in karaoke bars!' so we went with her."

"October & April" was not included on "Black Roses" because the CD was a concept effort and the song didn't fit in with the overall idea for the album. Instead, the track will make its debut on THE RASMUS' "Best of 2001-2009", a compilation of all the hit songs from their four latest albums, including the million-selling "In The Shadows", most of the singles and a few rarities.

Due on November 25, "Best of 2001-2009" features the following track listing:

01. In The Shadows
02. No Fear
03. Guilty (U.S. mix)
04. October & April (featuring Anette Olzon)
05. First Day Of My Life
06. Livin' In A World Without You
07. F-F-F-Falling
08. Chill
09. Immortal
10. Justify
11. Shot
12. Funeral Song
13. Ghost of Love
14. Open My Eyes (acoustic version)
15. In My Life
16. Ten Black Roses
17. Sail Away

Commented Lauri: "We felt it was time to sum up these past ten years. Eero said, let's call the album, 'This is how I spent my twenties.' No matter how stupid it sounded, that is pretty much the truth. We went on this crazy rollercoaster ride; it has been an amazing time. We have travelled to more than 60 countries, from India to Siberia, met thousands of fans all over the world and enthusiastic people working with our records. And when I look back on these last four records, I feel very proud of them. We decided to include most of the singles to the album with a couple of our favorite album tracks, and the new song 'October & April'."

  3. As I said already..
this song is truly a difficult one. No surprise that Tarja did not have balls to sing it... it is not in her range, actually, very demanding from technique point of view, unbelievably difficult and meaningfull lyrics...

On the other hand - as you see, this song perfectly fits Anette´voice.

And for all those you truly appreciated this piece of ART, I would like to dedicate a song as demanding as that one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmOtWyjs8iU

    Enjoy.

  5. This song is poppish, mainstreamish, very simple, very faceless and boring :) And it fits her voice, lol

    mermaid, lol great irony :)

  6. I agree with haatidje. She really is second choise after Tarja. Although that didn't came as a surprise.
Thumbs up for Tarja for saying no! It really wouldn't suit her voice.
And The Rasmus got worser and more mainstream after each album they've made.. Still think that that's bad..

  7. The title ius absolutely wrong...

    "Nightwish singer Anette Olzon"...

Bullshit!! Chucky Olzon is not a singer, she's just a screamer... a pathetic one, by the way... XD
And yeah, is very funny that Crapnette is ALWAYS asecond option... I wonder why The Rasmus guys didn't call her a lot earlier, I mean: her former band Alyson Crapenue was so amazing... not

evspko wrote on 16.10.2009 at 20:53

  18. I think she could be a soprano...meaning that she can reach very high notes...the way she does it, well, that's debatable...xD
The thing is that when someone says "soprano", one immediately thinks of someone singing classical music, and also the classification system comes from classical singing as well. But nowadays it's used for any kind of singers...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocal_range

I kinda like this song, although I expected something more up tempo from The Rasmus, with more guitars...and I think Anette's voice suits this song (and this style) perfectly, much better than Nightwish's style...

  25. I love The Rasmus a LOT. Used to love Anette...not so sure now but that's not the point. And I love Love songs....and I did love this song, until it got to the chorus....it....makes me wanna throw up....but I guess it's just not my type of music. It is weird to hear Lauri have the deepest voice in a song too, haha no offence to him of course. Still, I'll be buying it!

Apocalyptigasm wrote on 17.10.2009 at 01:05

  26. The problem are not the lyrics...
If you read the Rasmus' lyrics carefully you will notice they're actually good....obviously they are nothing alike NW's or Leonard Cohen's or Joaquìn Sabina's or...well you can put your favourite artist here, as long as his/her/their lyrics are somewhat poetic... but they're simple, honest and meaningful in their own way.
Lyrics from Apocalyptica's "Life burns" were written by TR's Lauri, who also participated in Bittersweet, and if I remember correctly, both were very acclaimed songs, maybe the problem is the music The Rasmus play??? I don't know...it's possible, since those two songs I mentioned above are METAL, but I assume people who like to read MFF's news are not pop-haters, since there are some bands that definately fit into pop-rock genre.
I think the real problem here is Anette Olzon, I assume is a lot to ask to have an open mind when it comes to her... Let's face it.... IF Tarja (one of the best singers in this world, perfectly capable of singing "poppy" and METAL songs) had accepted to sing it, everybody would love it, or at least, the comments would be a lot more positive....and the other possibility: no duet at all... just TR...what would happen? NO NW DRAMA, people (in case they comment) would limitate their opinion to say if they liked the song or not... Sad, don't you think? *(and here I sigh deeply)*...
Anyway...It would be nice that some people show a little more tolerance and respect in the future (for all the bands, for all the artists, for all the fans)...Just a suggestion.
I write my e-mail, in case you want to say I'm crazy or idiotic, I will be most pleased to answer back))

  27. That put me to sleep.

Anette truly does excel at simple melodies which require no real technique at all. I think this is the only time I've ever heard her sing where I didn't wince with pain. Instead, I just stared at the wall and spaced out for a few until silence brought me back to life.

I have a feeling the new nightwish album will be filled with songs that sound very similar to this. In a word. Boring.

Princes her voice is good here. Since well, every three year old girl could sing it as good. She should do more songs like this and quit Nightwish. Or make Nightwish go apart so Marco, Emppu and Tuomas can concentrate on their side projects en Jukka can join also another band. That's ok for me to =).

Please say you changed the names. If not, this is just stupid and shows you have no idea what the difference between belting and classical singing is...

The song is okay. It's not my kind of music, I think it's boring and the lyrics are quite meaningless, but it's okay, I don't have a problem listening to it. But I'm also glad Tarja refused to sing it, would be a waste of her beautiful voice. It fits Anette's voice, she sounds better than usual. I think she should make this kind of music.

Ariane wrote on 17.10.2009 at 19:16

  33. Elisa, you assume too much. Not everything that Tarja has done has been embraced by her fans. She has covered Smells Like Teen Spirit and received a lot of criticism for it. Sure people haven't "loved" it "just because it's Tarja". Don't assume that Tarja fans are as uncritical as most NW/Anette fans are (strictly judging from their comments).

Last time I checked NW haven't been fanboyed because they make mediocre, simple, unoriginal pop music with simple lyrics that merit no musical analysis at all. Where has the pretentiousness of NW fans left off?

Anyway, I think that was their BEST Tour so far. They seemed to enjoy themselves a lot more and gigs were very fun and full of energy. They also had a wide variety of good songs on their setlists.

I'm a HUGE fan of Tarja as well. I own "My Winter Storm" and "Dark Passion Play" is on its way here :D . For those who may wonder, I also own "Angels Fall First", "Oceanborn", "Wishmaster", "Over the Hills Ans far Away", "Century Child", "Once" and "Highest Hopes". My favorites are "Dark Passion Play", "Century Child" and "Oceanborn".

Sorry if I have offended anyone.
I have to admit I was a little upset because this drama reached a band whose news in no other way would be commented by some people in that ironic and disrespectful tone they reserve mostly for Anette related subjects. That?s why I thought that if Tarja was the collaborating singer (something I would like very much) they would be less caustic? but now I?m not sure, you see, those people have written crappy things/gossips about Tarja too?
    ...
Anyway, it?s nice to read, for the first time since I?m a fan, a good amount of critical comments about aTR?s song...

I suppose so... Anette is like a magnet for this stuff...as I have said it's a lot to ask to have an open mind when it comes to her...the attitude towards this girl has surpassed the profesional line and has evolved into a complex feeling in which everything she says or does or touchs or becomes near of turns negative...
Maybe, for some people, the right step to take would be to ignore her...I suppose it has to be very stressing to keep that feeling alive.

  70. Rosebud, when I said "optimistic side of the subject" I just meant that I like Anette and her job with Nightwish, not that I see everything "pinky cutie light". And of course she's not perfect. For instance, the concert in Rock Werchter was her worst and the gigs in South America were less than average, I'm glad they didn't come to my country with her singing like that. However, I really enjoy listening to her performances when she's on a very good shape.

You are in your right to dislike her and so I am in my right to like her as well, that's a fact. Thinking that by disliking her you're on a realistic point of view is not that at all. A true realistic one would be, like I said, accepting that everyone has their own opinion about it and not attacking them for what they believe in.

No resentments, take care now xP

"Guillaume : Did you choose to be the one in the boat, as the captain of the band ?
Tuomas : It was actually our pyro technician?s idea: ?we need to put you into a boat?. And the whole idea of the nautical, the ocean theme, came from him: ?let?s put an anchor, a boat and some rocks? but it was not my idea to be in a boat in the first place. I enjoy being there because I can always hide, when I go down, nobody sees me and I can drink my wine."

"Thinking that by disliking her you're on a realistic point of view is not that at all. "

Not by disliking her, but by seeing what kind of performer she really is and what attitude she really has. That is realistic point of view. The thing that both those things turned out poor is another case and the issue that some can like that is also another matter. Some people adore stuff like Lady Gaga, after all, lol

    .......
And now I suppose I have to clarify my position.... Well, I don't hate Anette...I'm a Nightwish fan so I tolerate her.
She isn't a bad singer and she is totally different from Tarja,(so I don't feel right to compare them as if they had the same musical background...I'm not sure if I explain myself)... I think her work as the new vocalist of NW is fine (she has good moments in DPP, and the gig I saw last year was great) but can be improved....I hope it will in the next album... with a little more study...( Anyway, I have always liked Nightwish because of the lyrics, and in that department they do as great as always)
....I don't read news that involve her personal life and I don't usually care about her solo stuff...this... is an "special" ocassion, you see, TR are involved...

And about Tarja...I'm a fan so maybe my opinion is not that objective.......she has a beautiful classical voice, and her work is, most of the time, flawless... I think the "separation" (even if I didn't like the way it was done) came in an excellent time for her, she's doing great as a solo artist.

...I would keep the same politics for her private life if she didn't do such a great job keeping it Private.

  98. Elisa, I got your position, but while Olzon is not a bad singer for pop, pop-rock and stuff like that, she is bad singer for metal and doesn't fit metal music in the terms of strength of her voice, manner of singing, style, the attitude and understanding that she is in metal band (which started to go mainstreamish, unfortunately) and not in cabaret show. Also she turned out to be not so professional as a performer.
She has good moments on DPP as studio album, but live she doesn't even handle some songs from DPP, not to mention the old songs.
Also, those two will always be compared with each other, cause one singer came after another one and replaced her in one and the same band. And actually you can compare them. since Olzon herself once made a pathetic attempt to tell that she once was almost taught some opera-classical stuff, but didn't go on, because she wanted "to scream" and "to rock", (poor woman doesn't even have the clue that those are not synonyms and good singers must sing, not shout songs out loud, and shouting out loud stuff doesn't make you "rock" automatically) some stupidity like that, cause it is clear with such voice "data" of hers she just would have never been able to become one or half-one opera/classical singer, and that "story" of hers was just lame excuse for her to prove that she is so fucking talented, also that it was another disrespectful semi-attack of hers towards classically-trained singers and opera singers, really not the first one. Well, she gave her-self away once by telling she doesn't really like opera, and later put classically trained singers who sing in metal bands on the same level with pop crap singers like Spears and Lavigne . Somehow she at the same time gave people a large lecture about narrow-mindness in music and in metal music in particular. It was so very funny, really made my day. But what could be expected from amateurish self-spoiled woman, who is herself very narrow-minded in music and doesn't have clue about metal at all?

Well ,as for NW lyrics, lots of lyrics on DPP are extremely cheesy and whiney :)

And about private life, in case you didn't know, that "diva" Turunen surprisingly keeps her private life to herself without making a tabloid out of it , although it is divas who like to make big blah-blah about every fucking day of their lives, while "sweet girl" Olzon openly writes about her menstruation problems and how many things she buy every fucking day, what brands exactly, writes self-praised poems about herself and etc.

The best scenario for future as in terms of NW would be:

-Olzon leaves NW and does whatever she wants, even runs around naked :)
    - If she is doing second album with NW, after its release she stops singing old song and sing only songs from DPP and that second album with her. I understand that Tuomas drinks lately a lot, so maybe instead of Anette he already sees/hears Pink Elephant and so he doesn't care how it looks or sounds, but other people do have eyes and ears still.

  103. Rosebud:
Well, I have always tought Metal is one of the best genres because it allows musicians to experiment and it's always open to new people: no matter their musical background....that's why...as pathetic as it sounds....I kept a hint of hope in this lady...musically speaking.
The attitude... that's another story... I've never liked hers...since day one when she published her journey to become NW's singer: the way she was told she wasn't the chosen one, how she cried...it didn't seem right to me, it shone with the desire for protagonism, so I decided I would think of her as an instrument for NW expression and tolerate her and avoid her "prose"... and ever since I have had peace of mind...until now...hehe
Yes... they'll be allways compared...I don't like it, but it's a reality for the reasons you've posted.........
Did she really say that??? Did she really lectured people about music??? :S......And this is yet another reason for stay away of her verbiage,(along with what you said about her talking about her period...Unbelievable...What happened to keeping a secret diary, with it's tiny gold key and pink or flowery covers, ????)....I didn't know this and I was happy living in total ignorance....

I'm happy to see we agree in the way Tarja keeps her private life PRIVATE...but I have to say something here...the word *diva* was originally used to designate a female opera singer with an extraordinary beautiful voice...a "divine" one...who possesses an exceptional magnetism in stage as well as a romantic aura of mistery around her... so Tarja (along with the other clasically trained singers in Metal) could actually be a diva (no ' "" ' here).
About what you said: it is divas who like to make big blah-blah about every fucking day of their lives"...well, I think it doesn't fit completely into the modern (and negative) sense or the word... since it is just a display of ego (and I would add stupidity and simple mindness) but not of arrogance/pride (really, I think the do that from the bottom of her heart)... So, in that context... Anette is not even half of a "diva" (just as britney or avril).
    As for the possible scenarios....
"-Olzon leaves NW and does whatever she wants, even runs around naked :)"....This one would be nice, hahahaha, except for the naked part...ugh!.
"- If she is doing second album with NW, after its release she stops singing old song and sing only songs from DPP and that second album with her. I understand that Tuomas drinks lately a lot, so maybe instead of Anette he already sees/hears Pink Elephant and so he doesn't care how it looks or sounds, but other people do have eyes and ears still." ...the elephant part is funny... but, seriously, if she stays, she HAS to work harder and take some SINGING CLASSES for improvement.... and maybe have her brain electroshocked (wow, I'm turning into an Anette-hater, and I haven't even actually read what she posts in her blog....XD)

    maria.vis. wrote on 21.10.2009 at 08:59

  105. Elisa,
Thanks for you comment, it is really thoughtful and i like to see thoughtfulness. ;)

About that "metal allows musicians to experiment and it's always open to new people: no matter their musical background":
    - the thing is that experiment must not go in a way that, as a result of that, music ceases to be metal at all and becomes just overll commercial mainstream something (deadend). As in this case people with different background may bring something new to metal, but at the same time they need to adjust themselves to this music, to make this bringing "in harmony" with the music they now sing, but what happened here?
She didn't adjust to metal music or metal ways (any of them), cause her voice by nature lacks what it is need for metal (the kind of metal NW plays- I mean in particular old songs, but they play a lot of old song, unfortunately), but she also didn't want to change the manner of her singing and left that utterly popish manner, she also doesn't understand the importance of appropriate image on stage or stage behaviour, which helps to create the whole picture (lead singer after all is face of the band). She just doesn't make any efforts to adjust, but at the same time she allowed herself to say out of the blue that she has" metal voice". That was a comedy. So in the end we just see that she falls out of the picture completely, she just does what she does, on her level, which doesn't fit in, but does she care or think about it really? Nope, it is seen that she thinks everything is perfect, cause she got famous, got lots of money and can buy tons of clothes. That's all.

Yes, she gave a lecture about music, not just about music, but about who is narrow-minded in music and metal music in particular. From her side it was SO "smart". You can find it somewhere on MFF, earlier in the news.

I know that "diva" was used before as a compliment, but thanks to open letter and the meaning expressed in it, it became somehow to sound with negative meaning. Unfortunately.
And honestly, a willing public display of ego (stupidity and simple mindness also) coincides in her case with arrogance/pride, cause actually such things, I mean displaying her ego at large (specially that she didn't spend years of hard job on metal stage like many others female metal singers, who still act more modest than she) is caused by her pride and her arrogance - clearly, fast success wasn't good for her but she feasts on it like a volture, cause only an arrogant person would make such dumb lectures about music, attack her critics bluntly, and make her private life the center of attention (on purpose) like in case with her blog, or better to say with what and how she writes there. BTW, she really likes Britney and Avril :) So actually she isn't as divish as them only because she started not long ago, only two years have passed since she came to spotlight :) Cause actually she complied with every stuff which was written in that open letter to Turunen, but Olzon did it within 2 years! Her speed is remarkable :)

About singing lessons, yeah she definately needs them, but the thing is that every singer has his/her own limit and you can't go beyond it, can't expand it forever and ever and ever, although training and improving is always better than non-improving and non-training,also biological age counts as with aging the changes start in human organism and it affects the voice also and such. She is too old now to re-make herself in terms of voice. She may slightly improve, yeah, but only slightly. But not enough :(
