Review: SONATA ARCTICA - The Days Of Grays

Unia from Metal From Finland wrote a review of Sonata Arctica's "The Days Of Grays". Few excerpts below:

"The Days Of Grays" is the sixth full-length studio album by Finnish metal band Sonata Arctica and was released in Finland on the 16th of September 2009. The album also features vocals by Johanna Kurkela and cello arrangements by Perttu Kivilaakso (Apocalyptica). Henrik Klingenberg described the album as "a bit darker and maybe not so complex as 'Unia'. Nevertheless, it's definitely not a back-to-the-roots album with fast power metal. All the trademark Sonata stuff is on there, solos, lots of singing, some slower songs."

The album opens with an instrumental of "Everything Fades to Gray", atmospheric with beautiful keyboard melodies, which flows into "Deathaura", the longest song of the album. This song consists of ten parts out of which the first part is almost entirely sung by Johanna Kurkela, and is very complex, haunting, epic and bombastic.....

I like this album, actually, and I'm not the hugest SA fan around here. Silence is still my favourite, but this is a close second.

I totally agree 100%. This is definitely one of the best, if not the best metal album of the year so far. The only other album that I think can compete with it is Mastodon's Crack the Skye. Of course, since SA and Mastodon are on opposite ends of the metal spectrum, it would come down to a fan's taste.

Of course, I say best album so far because we all know that both of these albums will be crushed on Sept. 29 by the brutal masterpiece that is DETHALBUM II!!!

After the semi-deception of "Unia"... i am really looking foward to hear this one.

If this is how SA is going to sound from now on then good ridance. After there guitarist left after doing Unia i thought maybe this is a good thing cus Unia was horrid and the musical style was a bad direction to go. Now they just have gotten a little better than Unia but not by much. a sham too.

Now Jani the old guitarist makes an album in cains offering that is amazing. I dont know who is deciding the sound of SA but its only going downhill.

I started listening to SA cus of the power and energy and speed, coupled with the voice of tony. Now this review says its "bombastic," I would call it underwhelming.
