NIGHTWISH Frontwoman Talks About Her Singing Technique

NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon recently wrote a blog entry on her official web site where whe talked about singing technique. She said, "It's hard to go in to exactly what I do when I sing since some things are 'by nature' and just come naturally but, of course, a lot of things are what I have learned earlier in vocal lessons and also during my career as the singer in NIGHTWISH where my voice is needed to be able to sing many high-pitched songs for 1.5 hours many nights a week.

"First of all, what I use most when I sing is a technique called 'belting.' For you who don't know what kinda vocal sound types normally are talked about, there are different sounds and techniques to use when singing. This technique is a way to come very high up by pushing the vocal cords together, slamming them against each other, so that no air at all can leak through. If any air leaks through, it can make the voice soar and aching. I do this technique also by thinking that I lift my upper lift upwards, kinda showing my teeth and a good sound to practise for it is to imitate an evil witch. You know the evil laughter. Also imitating a car like: öhrn, öhrn, öhrn... as a car accelerating forward. These things make me lift the lip and close the cords. Of course there are so many more things to do to make this technique perfect but that's an easier way to explain what I do."

In a recent interview with Classic Rock's Dave Ling, NIGHTWISH keyboardist/mainman Tuomas Holopainen was asked if alarm bells rang when, echoing her predecessor, Olzon recently hired a personal manager (Swedish management company Hagenburg Management, which also represents EUROPE and THE CARDIGANS). "At the beginning I had a feeling of déjà vu," he replied. "But when we discussed it I understood that she needs somebody who speaks her own language [Swedish]. Her manager is a very, very reasonable guy."

When asked how Anette is handling the fame, Tuomas replied, "She has told me a couple of times that she might not be able to handle it, on top of her divorce. I've seen her close to collapse and it has scared me, so we are protecting her. There will be no more interviews."

ok, but what about her dressing technique? Look at 1:49 till 1:56 - what that dress is doing! Then again 2:50.. actually, all video comes as a shock.
Looks like she is pregnant on her back, too, ... ? or something like that.
I have never ever seen dress like this. It has to be studied - this just can not come naturally to normal human being.
What about having the ocassional hard look into mirror? Whatever you think about Tarja - she at least dressed herself properly.
Actually, if I would not see this I might forget - I need to buy big sack of potatoes today. :-) Thanks for reminding me.

This is NO folk band, is it? So, why she is dressed as if they caught her on the street by accident few minutes before the show? As I see it, she clearly shows NO respect either for fans or for the rest of a band.
I just do not understand - they had no problem to comment Tarjas looks, when they did not like them (like these leaves in her hair - it is even on DVD). How could they stand this?

To Sorcha: what did you want to know? As for webside: she did sing ONE song completely without Nightwish - that clearly deserves a webside of her own.

Looks like there are milions of people who just can not survive A DAY without her suggestions.

I just hope I do not know any.

Does Anette's dressing style really matter so much ? I would like once to read comments about NW with no mentioning Tarja and the opposite- something about Tarja with no Ex-NW singer in it!
And i am wondering how stubb?rn the people can be in keep talking one and the same more than 4 years :D Altough the both Anette and tarja are SO DIFFERENT in singing and dressing style that it's not possible ( and not necessary !) to compare them.

I honestly do not know any singre who would show so little respect to herself, to fans, to band. Untill we are not going to mention some poor women, who have problems with alcohol or drugs, off course. Women NORMALLY try to look good. People (women or men) who are going to perform in front of people normally try to look good. It is called good manners.
I do not know any singer who would voluntarily put this dress on, sorry. If you just give me one example - that might help.
Does not matter, if you choose opera singer, pop singer, metal singer, etc. I just do not believe that Madonna, Britney Spears, Cristina Sccabia, Sharon Den Adel, or whoever will get dressed like this. Seriously, even Pink would not. (See, I am not mentioning Tarja at all). Really, just give me one equally terribly dressed singer.

She is obviously in desperate need of attention. She thinks she is Britney Spears so that people care what she does on daily basis. But there is one "little" difference she might not be aware of: the other people write what Britney does every days and NOT Britney. ;-)

It's so funny how she actually thinks that there are people who care about what she eats, what cat she wants or what she watched on tv. Maybe that's even sad. And I always wanted to know what brand of shoes where the best.

And I have to agree with everyone who is saying that the dress she's wearing is horrible. But that she didn't had any respect towards her bandmates was already clear to me. Just read the interviews. Especially the ones for Swedish magazines.

And i generaly hate to give such comments about who looks how, coz its a point of view and very subjective! To be honest I also don't like Anette's dress from this performance, but i saw NW 2 times for this DPP tour and her dress this year in Cologne, Germany, was really nice! I dont know why am i tring to convince you, that Anette's dresses are mostly pretty ok, check some pictures from other US performances.
But where i live people say : 'better to be in peoples mouth, instead kneeling in front of their feet' -meaning better to talk about you no matter what ,instead to forgeting about you :D

Excellent points here.I think that the world is much more full now that we saw what kind of hat is good for the beach.

I mean,ok about the singing techniques,since fans asked her,but the rest?...I don't think that anyone would be interested in reading about the French toast i ate today and how much i read my books for University.
Artists should stick to the basics.It's nice to communicate with fans,but with a certain way and to a certain point.An excellent chance is the concert.For example,some of the most successful bands in history of music,Iron Maiden or Deep Purple,never did that kind of things,but they are to the top after all these years.

The sad thing is that there are the so-called "die-hard" fans,aka puppets,that actually comment on her blog and call this a "noble and generous gesture".

The more she doesn't stick to the basics,doesn't act like a real artist and separates herself from the band,the biggest dive behavior she will develop.You will see.

To EJ: I am reacting here because I love Nightwish and in the beginning, I did like Anette. And on the album I still like her (Live she sucks most of the time) but I hate her actions. She should be more thankfull and show some respect towards her bandmates and her fans. Without both of them, she would still be singing with Alyson Avenue. So she should stop being so arrogant and being an attention whore and stop complaining about how hard the songs are to sing. If you don't like it, then stop doing it and don't act like everybody should fell sorry for you. She has to stop being such a poser.

To be perfectly honest I don't even know why this has been published on MFF, it's not news, an interview or an article of any kind, it's just an entry ripped from a blog (with some tiny added extras from other sources).

She even terrifies Tuomas with her demands now.Clothing sponsors?(and then Tarja was accused that she wanted money from everything...)
And finally:she is tired.She saw how hard it is to tour with a band like NW without ever playing outside of her country.She saw the difficulties.For God sake she couldn't deal with a freaking smoke machine!
Please,put aside your love for her and see these facts.

I've got nothing against Tarja either and I understand that it's not the same when Anette sings the songs Tarja made with NW. But I honestly think that some of the crap about Nightwish not getting along with Anette or Anette becoming a diva is just going too far. And just for the record, I do think. That's why I support Anette because it must be terribly difficult for her with all these people bitching about her. I know that I liked NW more before DPP, but they've only made one album with Anette so far...so only time will tell. And it's the same with whether NW will survive the stress us idiot fans/ex fans/fake fans keep putting on them. And people complain that they don't respect their fans enough? What ever we argue here is pointless...everything all ready going forward...Tuomas is making new songs for the next album and the last concert of this 2 years period gonna be in Helsinki next autumn.After that they gonna go to the studio for the next album and I'm very enthusiastic what we gonna hear in future.Lets hope we (who like the band) gonna have an awesome musical experience!

I'm proud Tarjaholic and I want to say (to all NW fans): Anette has much improved, I can see her progress. It is not possible to compare anyone with anyone - everyone is unique. Some are less endowed with talent and someone more. If Anette will work more with her voice, she can be a good singer. I still see that she is only in the middle of her very long and painful journey.

PS: Please,STOP the talk about Tarja, she is not already in the NW! She is a great singer, which makes hard work on her solo career and she deserves our respect! The same respect like Anette as NW singer !!!

The fact that NW sells more than before doesn't mean their music is better, it only means than their music has become more easy listening...you can see that actually the crappier a band is the more CD it sells... I am not saying that NW is a crap but their music has lost the innocence it had in the previos CD's, it's more commercial

Creo que la forma de cantar de Anette no era para esta banda definitivamente.
He visto a Nightwish cuando se presentaron en Buenos Aires (Argentina) en Obras, y me llamó la atención las veces que Anette se quedaba sin voz en un tema.
Eso le puede suceder a una banda que recién comienza, pero definitivamente no a Nightwish que está en la cima de su carrera.
De todos modos Anette ponía lo mejor de si en ese show (a pesar del intenso calor que hacía)... El mejor carisma para un público que la recibió muy bien, a pesar de ser incondicional de Tarja... Pero su actuación en cuanto a lo lírico muestra no estar en su mejor forma.
De todos modos no creo que sea culpa de Anette no poder dar más de si en Nightwish. A ella la han contratado para ocupar el lugar de Tarja, y trata de hacerlo lo mejor posible.
En mi opinión... me resulta extraño que a pesar de que Tuomas haya tenido en su poder algo asi como 2000 demos y 2 años para buscar a una nueva cantante, se haya inclinado por Anette.
Tuomas es muy talentoso y es el creador indiscutido de Nightwish.... Pero me llama la atención como alguien que tuvo tantos aciertos cuando creo su banda, ahora haya elegido este tipo de vocalista.
Yo me hubiera inclinado por una cantante como Sharon den adel... o Ailyn (Sirenia) ... Pero bueno, le deseamos lo mejor a Anette y desde ya siempre le estaremos agradecidos por dar lo mejor de ella en Nightwish.

So simple, and so few people seem to grasp it. I would also like to point out the rest of the band is in tee shirts and jeans. She's actually going a bit beyond this whole shit with "respect for the band." Since when does a look make the band? Tuomas has made his choice, and you all need to learn to respect that. You don't like it, again, just leave it and grow up. If there's a problem, it will be addressed by the band, not you. And I'm sure one bad dress is not enough to break up the band over. I was wondering why would a person say SO MANY things in public about her outfits and especially insisting on their brands.In the beginning i thought(naively enough) that she wanted to show her fans(especially girls)what she wears because she cared about their wondering...But then it struck me:
