'Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996-2006' Free Chapter Available

Bazillion Points Books is offering a free download of "Chapter 5. The Upward Spiral", excerpted from the newly released North American edition of "Once Upon a Nightwish: The Official Biography 1996-2006", by Mape Ollila.

Joining the book in progress at the start of 2000 during the aftermath of "Oceanborn", this chapter gives inside perspective on events including NIGHTWISH's early gigs with RAGE and future bassist Marco Hietala's early band SINERGY; singer Tarja Turunen's bloody battles with mosquitoes in the wilds of Finland; the band and chief songwriter Tuomas Holopainen's rarely discussed and ill-fated flirtation with the Eurovision song contest; and the creation of what would ultimately be the breakthrough "Wishmaster" CD.

The sample chapter can be downloaded from Bazillion Points Books at this location.

In this remarkably revealing official biography, author Mape Ollila charts the rise from village student project to global stardom, gaining unprecedented access not just to the members of NIGHTWISH past and present; but also their families, their loyal and lewd crew, their peers, their critics, and countless other insiders from the NIGHTWISH adventure. The book lays bare the creative firepower and personal demons of songwriter Tuomas Holopainen; the unique talents and traits of guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, drummer Jukka Nevalainen, and bassist Marco Hietala; and the true reasons behind the 2005 departure of vocalist Tarja Turunen — in the band's words and hers.

Along the way, the band struggles with religious protesters, fortune-tellers, naked crew members, health problems, shady promoters, out-of-control fans, and the growing pains of an ever-steeper rock star learning curve. Happily ever after or not, these unique Finnish personalities are brought to life in this journey. For longtime fans and newcomers seeking the backstory of how NIGHTWISH came to where they are today, this is rare public airing of the mysteries that exist.

The 352-page paperback has been revamped by Bazillion Points from earlier Finnish editions, and features extensive corrections, with 32 pages of rare color images dating back to the dawn of the band, and a complete list of international concert appearances from the entire Tarja Turunen era, all on exquisite 100gsm paper with a glossy folding cover.

  1. OMG they used to be awesome. Perfectness. I'm still sad because we lost this band. It doesn't have the same soul anymore. It doesn't touch at all.

  2. Rocky, than listen to Within Temptation or Evanescance and stop mourning...it's 4 years now!!!

  3. Yes, they used to be awesome, but nothing lasts forever.
She also used to be awesome, but nothing lasts forever.

She is now "SO FREE" (as she use to say twice per week within last three and half years) and they are "SO HAPPY"
But they are not awesome anymore. On the other hand - good suggestion, OW.

  4. I just think they all suck nowadays. And that's sad.

  5. There are more good female fronted metalbands. For example Delain or Amberian Dawn. Maybe you can try those then.

I love the NW book. One of the best biography's I've read. It's a shame that they've split up.

  6. Yes they were awsome, and they still are.Tuomas is still writing amazing lyrics and they are making amazing music.

    4 years...leave it already!!!
And everyone is talking how they kicked her out of the band, but I remember the interview where she said that she would leave the band after one more album so splitting up would come no matter what...
I you don't like the band now with Anette don't listen them and don't go to their concert

  7. Nightwish are the best - then, now and forever - I don't care what anyone says.

Nightwish are still Nightwish no matter who is singing but Anette is better than Tarja in my view. I'm not saying Tarja was crap but her voice isn't as versatile as Anette's.

I have this book and am almost finished it. The band had no choice to get rid of Tarja and they couldn't have found anyone better than Anette to take over.

  8. to Dani: what are you talking about? who cares who kicked whom? The only thing what matters is the product - and facts are facts. She is completelly mediocre singer - should she not be "former nightwish singer" she would sing in bars only.
They became completely mediocre band led by strange looking 40 years old vocalist with no dressing sense but Prima Donna manners (see Greece incident).
Ther are many better bands now.
to Sorcha: thanks for tips, I will have a look at them

  9. Old NW vs new NW blah, blah, blah....
Tarja would've of left after Dark Passion Play anyways. But I have to agree, if you don't like Nightwish now, don't listen, I don't.
I read that Anette wanted to be part of something big, so she sent her demo. I know, that she's been singing since she was 9 years old, had tons of private singing lessons, growing up. But she sounds so average. Bought DPP, we were disappointed with the vocals, but the cd did come with an orchestral version, so we listen to that instead.
After Forever broke up earlier this year. NW should call Floor Jansen up to be the new singer, then, my husband and I will listen to NW again.
Saying this, I have to agree with Rocky

  10. @ CS

Yeah, Floor has an amazing voice. I think After Forever(album) destroys DPP in every aspect music. They got better unlike NW who chose to write simpler music. It isn't all Anette's fault either, and I don't think the vocals were all the problem with DPP. I personally still think NW is okay, but they seem so average now. If you take away the big orchestera effects and the amazing production, what you get left is just a standard, commerical metal band. Listen to Oceanborn and compare it to DPP. Sure the production isn't that clean, but the music is top grade and is played at a high level, something Tuomas admits he will never do again. That is said because I wish that they would go back to their power/progressive metal style instead of all of those orchestral effects used in their music now. Within Temptation does this too, and no offense to the fans of theirs, but they use that as a tool so they can write lame and simple music. "The Heart of Everything" was a horrible album, but "Mother Earth" wasn't that bad though. Talk about a band that completely changed who they were. NW seems to be heading down that path, especially with Anette doing the whole "website" thing now. It really sucks because they used to be so unique and good, but now they are mediocre. They remind me of In Flames. The old shit was great until Reroute to Remain and it everything changed. Now they abandoned their old sound and decided to make it more mainstream. That is what NW is doing. Damnit! All of the best bands do this! I wish the best for Tuomas and NW, but hell, at least we got Wintersun! I can't wait for "Time" to come out!

  11. To CS and James: I don't think Floor will ever join NW though. It would be pretty cool, but I don't think it will ever happen. I think she has plans of her own ;).
