ANETTE OLZON: Leaving the stage on Belo Horizonte was due to vocal problems

ANETTE OLZON sent a pressrelease to Brazilian media where she clearified the reasons behind her sudden "collapse" which caused her to leave the stage in the middle of the NIGHTWISH show in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on November 10th 2008.

OLZON stated that the smoke on stage got on her vocal chords to make her lose her voice. She was trying to sing until she reached the point she couldn't do it anymore and therefore was "forced" to leave the stage.

NIGHTWISH has always had a very good and close relation to their fans in Brazil and the thought of disappointing the fans was too great for Anette. The band tried to buy some time for Anette to regain her voice back but it didn't. NIGHTWISH ended up playing 2 more songs after Anette left the stage but were forced to stop the show after that.

After the show, people stayed in the venue to get some kind of explanation to what happened. After a while, promoter Eric de Haas from Dynamo Productions came on stage to tell the fans that the concert was over and Nightwish was already back on their hotel.

It is reported that the next show NIGHTWISH did the next day in the capital of Brazil (BRASILIA) went well and the band the song THE POET AND THE PENDULUM on their setlist.

But that would not say anything about Marco at the end of the set saying that Annette had many great problems going on...Smoke would not cause great problems...

On YouTube there is a footage from yesterday's gig.
Anette sings well, fans are happy and show her their support.
So everything is OK.
And this is the only thing that really matters.

That's kind of weird ... Voice problems..Personal problems...Anette Olzon is a nice singer et probably a nice person but that's a real shame that so many shows have to be cancelled..

I don't believe this explanation either. It's obvious that something else is going on. Why is it so difficult to admit in public that there are a lot of pressure (and maybe personal reasons)? Anyway, the reason for "collapse" isn't smoke on stage. I'm sure of it.

I don't agree with you. Have you ever visited any concert from Tarja after she was kicked out by Nightwish? She sings like an angel live. She reaches every note. Anette isn't as good as her.
But she sings great, too. It's her own style. I still listen to Nightwish. Because I think that people have to give Anette a chance.
I don't think it was because of the smoke on stage, why Anette left. On the one hand Marco says she's going through a hard time after she left the stage and on the other hand she says it was because of the smoke. Strang :S

Nevermind... Our problem for now is that she caused that a lot of concerts were cancelled, so... I think that simple smoke couldn't provoke her problems with voice so many times... It's ridiculus...

Well I really don't think this is the reason why she left the stage, the only way she could get that worst with the smoke, was if she had laryngitis, and well, if she had that she wouldn't be singing the show at all , I know it, I'm an Opera singer, I know how it works, so I think this excuse it's not necessary, so what if she has problems, EVERYBODY does, and she's not the exception, she shouldn't say anything, she doesn't have to. maybe a simple non complicated apologize would've been enough.

I think that Anette is a person like everybody here, and obviously she can feel sick or sad in any moment.
I don´t believe that this accident is ridiculous. Marco try to explain something that he don´t know exactly, the only valid explanation is that of her.

She´s a great singer in the studio and live.
I hope that she feel better.

When you lost a guitar string it's easy to change.When the voice is instrument there is not much to do when you lost it.It's so easy to write nasty and stupid comments like this Tarja fan "Tarja back" but any of us don't have balls try to do it like Anette.She is a human and needs respect like other people.After this I like and respect Anette more than ever.Nightwish is a great band!
PS.I know many artists who has lost the voice on the stage so this is not the first and last time!

Hard to believe... Unfortunately, they've canceled so many shows and all of them with different "excuses" and hard to believe, that now everything they say is not taken as truth...
They HAVE disappointed their fans.. too bad... I suggest Tarja go back to Nightwish!! otherwise, get some singer that is able to sing whatever the fans want to hear!!!
Let's see what happens in Argentina, tickets are really expensive to get to a disappointment like this one... I think it's not worthy!

I don't really care what the reason is because these things happen. If she lost her voice then she can't help that. If it is personal problems then she can't help that either. If it's pressure from becoming the face of Nightwish then it's no wonder when there are still annoying people who are saying that she isn't suitable for Nightwish. Well obviously she is or else they wouldn't have chosen her, ok? I stand by Nightwish's descision, even if she's completely different it doesn't matter because they're more epic now than they ever were and everything they do works perfectly. I think if people can't accept this then they aren't real fans, they are just stuck in the past.

Ok, rant over. I hope she feels better soon, whatever the problem is :)

I agree with people who wrote that too many concerts this year were canceled and everytime it was because of Anette. It is not that I hate her,but she is not an appropriate replacement for Tarja. Metal is very difficult and demanding music genre. People, Anette was singing in Abba cover band and now she want's to sing in a metal band and not just any band but or beloved Nightwish!!?? Come on!!! She had apsolutely no idea who the hell NW were,she heard about them few mounts before Tarja got fired. Where was she for whole 9 years???? I would really like to know why did guys choose her to be a singer! I honestly don't understand that!!! And now this? She lost her voice because of the smoke?? I don't believe that. I love NW more than anything,at least I did when they were something,and ok Tarja left,they kicked her out of the band,but I can live with that,and with the fact they also kicked Sami out of the band almost 8 years ago,I survived all of that,but what I don't understand why Anette?? When there are so many other great female vocalists! I know many of you will hate me for what I said,but I know I'm not the only one who wants to know the answers to these questions.

I see no reason why people would hate you for saying things how you feel. You are placing facts on the table and you are right in many ways. All the tour cancellations for Nightwish (which were plenty) were all due to Anette. There is no denying.

When Sami was replaced for Marco, I think it was a perfect move cause Marco was and still is one of the best voices in Finland and he gave a lot to Nightwish. And it also opened so many doors for Tuomas when it came to composing music.

Which is better, Anette or Tarja...well that is an neverending battle really. I am very happy that Tarja is doing well with her solocareer. She really deserves all the best.

However I am pretty sure that Tuomas being the person he is, will not put Nightwish in jeopardy. If he feels that Anette can't deliver the goods, she is out. But as long as she has the blessing of Tuomas, she will remain in the roster.

@Ivy: I completely agree with you, and you don't have to worry about Tarja/NW zealots, there will always be people who can't see beyond their blind fanatism. It takes courage to criticize objectively a band it has been in our hearts since it began, and we do that because we love Nightwish. We just can't close our eyes and pretend nothing has happened.

@Oceanborn: I agree that Sami replacement with Marco change NW in a positive manner. Even with Tarja being kicked out from the band, is not what they did, but how they did it. Tuomas said he has regrets about how he managed to fire Sami. Tarja deserved more than just a plain letter, she gave a lot to the band to deserve that. So, if she was treated like that, you can't just but imagine how poor Annete would be treated when he decide to fire her, too. Maybe a fax/email with a band picture without her and a note saying Goodbye?. :P

I do agree that people have to give a chance to Anette. She's a person and deserves respect.

Tarja never cancelled a concert. The people saying that she cancelled concerts are just repeating a lie they've read from someone else on the Internet. When asked which concerts did Tarja cancel, they can't find ONE, never mind "a lot".

I think that Nightwish became that famous thanks to the great job every member of the band did [Tarja and Tuomas ,of course, carried out most of it]And do you think that a 9-year career is just NOTHING??? We care about NW and Tarja because the old Nightwish was one of the best bands in the world...
What Anette tries to do is just impossible...Tarja[and the rest of the band] brought Nightwish to this high level and now she's kicked out.
It must have been very hard for Nightwish to become that popular...I am sure they had very bad moments and experiences but they didn't give up and reached this level and Anette got everything done...
She had to be prepared for these 'aggressive' fans.

What I meant is that some people want her back, but you don't know if she wants that. Returning to Nightwish means for her giving up her solo career, which she started in 2004, while she was still with the band, so she planned that very carefully in advance.It also means for her working with the people whom she will never forget what they did to her.
That's what she said in many interviews.
She also said that for her now it would be impossible to sing with Nightwish, because she has great plans for future, e.g.
touring with classical concerts.
Do you think she was lying and she would give up everyting to work again with guys ? -that's what I meant.
I read a lot of her recent interviews and I think that people shouting: "I want Tarja back" are disrespectful not to Anette or Nightwish but to Tarja.

But didn't you see crowd's behaviour? They made so much noise!.. If I were she, I couldn't sing anything at all. It seems there were two groups of fans in the hall - agreed and disagreed. But Marco said right: "We are just four guys"... What can they do without her? And there is no question in difference between Tarja and Anette, the band needs a female vocalist. And Anette is their friend-n-vokaali, as Tarja never been.

Somebody here said Tarja never cancelled a gig. That's so wrong. She cancelled not even concerts, but the whole tours... Because she always prefer to make her solo (read Open Letter to understand my opinion). And I suppose Jukka's notes about cancelled tour (The Day Before Tomorrow) is reffered to Tarja.

So many concerts were cancelled not because Anette was weak to work the tour. She was metal-vocalist for many years and she fits for it. There were another reasons to cancel some gigs because of organization, because of promoters and other things. And few concerts of USA tour only were cancelled by Anette, because she was ill and these concerts were planned for each day during a week. If we don't look at that tour, not so many gigs were cancelled because of she this year.
This year was great for the band...

I love Anette, she sings sincerely... I hope she won't leave the band 4ever.
