STRATOVARIUS: Returns in 2009 with the name Stratovarius
23.10.2008
STRATOVARIUS has issued the following update on their official Myspace page:
"Live gigs and new album with Matias Kupiainen on guitar
Finnish melodic power metal legends Stratovarius are breaking the silence since guitar player Timo Tolkki left the band. They will return with a new studio album in 2009. It is a positive and powerful record that the band's fans all over the world are certain to take to their hearts.
'After Tolkki gave his blessing for us to go on without him, and after writing music together again this summer and a lot of thought, we have decided to carry the legacy of Stratovarius into the future', says Jens Johansson.
'We are all very excited about the record and about playing Stratovarius music live to our fans. We can't wait.', adds Timo Kotipelto.
The new guitar player is 25-year old Finnish guitar phantom Matias Kupiainen. Jörg Michael says, 'in Matias we found new character who fits perfectly with his way of melodic guitar shredding, he is a killer player, a 'Wunderkind' from Finland!'
The first two festival dates for 2009 have been confirmed already:
Wacken Rocks, Kreuth / Aurich, May 22, 2009
Wacken Rocks, Kreuth / Aurich, May 23, 2009
More 2009 festivals are planned and will be announced soon. These dates will be followed by a concert tour.
Stratovarius is:
Timo Kotipelto – vocals
Matias Kupiainen – guitars
Lauri Porra – bass
Jörg Michael – drums
Jens Johansson – keyboards

The Truthful Stratovarius is dead!!!

NOw how should we define "the heart of stratovarius", the person which makes Stratovarius what it is?
Was it Timo tolki? No. He was a part of the heart, but he lost that position after 2005's release of their black album. He was too busy doing his maniac dance to notice that he strayed away form the brilliance he was creating. Then, of course, Tolky had to find the Gipsy in him and go back to madness
Stratovarius hear is what it is - its vocals of Kotipelto, its drumming of Jorg, its keyboards of Jens. Lyrics, melody, also was the heart of Stratovarius. But Tolki was not the only composer there. Saying that Tolki was the only songwriter would mean killing amazing Stratovarius songs like Uncertainty (written by Kotipelto), What Can I Say? (written by Kotipelto), Glory of the World (written by Johansson), Keep the Flame (written by Johansson), Why Are We Here? (written by Johansson), Curtains Are Falling (written by Johansson), Run Away (written by Johansson) and Ride Like the Wind (written by Johansson). Are those songs not Stratovarius? Do they not have the heart of Stratovarius?
Some of those are better than anything T.Tollki has created since his Elements Pt.II.
If anything, with Tollki and Stratovarius going separate ways, band has more freedom of creativity. They have already proved to be able to retain the sound and the HEART and, with the new Mattias addition to the band, we might finally hear something as exciting as Visions were.
They earned the right to have this Name. They have proved that new album IS Stratovarius more so than two last Tollki's Strato-albums were, so, by all means, this name, the legacy, the HEART belongs to T.Kotipelto, L.Porra, J.Michael and J.Johansson
One member left - so what. The core and the heart of the band i still there, so they should, by all means continue with the name they earned.
Thankfully, from all the stuff posted, the reborn Stratovarius album will more stratovarius-golden-age-like than Tolki's RR can ever hope to be. I can only hope that Mr. Tolki will realize his mistake and stop trying to impersonate Stratovarius with his new band. "that stage" is over for him, he should get over it and create new music.
Can't wait for new album of Stratovarius.

The Strato without Tolkki and Kainulainen no exist !!!

Tolkki really are the Stratovarius soul!
Without him, there's no Stratovarius!!
It's wrong!
Hail for Revolution Renaissance! They keep the flame of Stratovarius alive!

Ergo, you are so right. Stratovarius is better off without Tolkki. That's right, I said Stratovarius. Tolkki is way too bitter to make good music nowadays. I believe Kotipelto and the gang will make it work and they'll produce great songs for all of us Strato fans!

Stratovarius without Timo Tolkki is like Black Sabbath without Tony Iommi. Metallica without James Hetfield. AC/DC without Angus Young. Strato was Tolkki's baby. His brainchild. The project he gave birth to with the initial release in 1989. As much as I love Jens and Kotipelto, just putting the name Stratovarius on a project doesn't make it so in my opinion. I do see that Timo did give his blessing so I can't be too upset. I would love to hear the new material as I'm sure it is going to be great. But in my mind it truly will not be Stratovarius.

Well, if "Dreamspace", "Twilight Time", "Fright Night","Fourth Dimension""ElementsPt1+2" (ALL MUSIC BY TOLKKI),"Episode","Visions","Destiny","Infinite"(90%MUSIC BY TOLKKI) are not the Soul of Stratovarius then i agree: Stratovarius actually was and is the 9 b-sides and bonustrack composed by Johansson/Kotipelto! That 9 songs grew Stratovarius big all around the world. How much people can worship just 1 name without think anything else!
