LORDI Horror Film Director Interviewed

ussi Ahlroth of Helsingin Sanomat recently conducted an interview with Pete Riski, who directed LORDI's horror film "Dark Floors".

Riski shot a horror film with his childhood friend Tomi Putaansuu, or LORDI mainman Mr. Lordi, using a video camera already about 20 years ago in Rovaniemi. Now the horror film buffs are at it again. The budget is just bigger — EUR 4.3 million.

"The only potential problem in my opinion was that we had to start with the monsters, and then figure out a plot to put around it", Riski points out.

The problem was solved when the right genre was found. "Dark Floors" is a horror fantasy — stylised darkness, which does not even try to seek any kind of realism.

"The good thing in this movie, and in LORDI's music videos, is a certain kind if naivete and comic strip quality. It is suitable for monsters."

The human characters in the film have been consciously turned into stereotypes. In other respects as well, it relies on the clichés of the genre.

"While pondering the ideas, and shooting the film we often got flashes that this thing happened in one movie or another. But it's OK to use clichés, as long as you don't plagiarise."
