Interviews
Riina of Silentium interviewed for Metal Act
1. When was the first time you started singing and why?
Probably about the same time I started to talk. I don't really know why, it's just been an uncontrollable urge to do so since I can remember.
2. How did you get to be in Silentium?
Sami contacted me two and a half years ago and asked if I’d like to join them. Since I was already familiar with the music and some of the people as well, I jumped to the opportunity.
3. What's the significance of Silentium for you?
Well, of course Silentium allows me to express myself in ways that I might not have the chance otherwise. For example gigs and studio, I've always had some kind of band stuff going on, but with Silentium it's a bit more in a way. And then there are the guys.. A second family you might say. I am a very loving person, and I treasure my relationships and all of the guys are irreplaceable to me.
4. What song from"Seducia"do you think it perfectly suits your voice?
That would probably be Hangmans Lullaby.
5. Do you have a female voice that you admire a lot?
I have many.. Tori Amos for example, and for some old-school, I really like Ella Fitzgerald, because she truly can use her voice as an instrument. I also love PJ Harveys rugged style. And many many more.
6. If one day hypothetically speaking you would have to choose only 3 guys from the band because of some circumstances who would you choose?
Oh my god what a question: D There is no way I could choose three. I could choose one, and it would be Jari, obviously, since we are to be married. But three.. They are all equally special to me; I hope it never comes to choosing between them.
7. Matti once said you're most "rock' n roll" than all of them. What do you think he meant with that?
Well... Let's say I have been known to enjoy my drink after a show. And a few after that. He probably was referring to the attitude, both on stage and off. But in all fairness, I haven’t seen the guys spitting in their glasses either!
8. What was your biggest challenge since you've started working with the guys?
The early mornings on training week-ends. Definitely. I am not a morning person.
10. If you wouldn't have been in Silentium you'd be...
... Applying for theatre schools, maybe, or just sitting home miserable, petting the cats neurotically. Oh wait, I do that anyway, but I'm not miserable while I do it.
11. What are the most important things for you as a band?
Integrity, creativity of the music, friendship. For me anyway.
12. When the guys asked you to play with them, weren't you afraid that you would always be compared with the former vocalist Tiina?
No not really. I think I was more intimidated by Ex-Lullacry Tanja's massive voice on the Sufferion-album. But it’s futile, since all of the three of us have a unique style and I hope we will be portrayed as unique artists.
13. I know music & lyrics are composed by Sami & Matti. Have you ever considered the idea of doing lyrics & music?
Yes I have, in my previous band Parallax I wrote all the lyrics and composed all the melodies; we made the songs together, jamming etc. So maybe we will see some of my work in Silentium in the future as well. I keep quite high standards for my self, so very little material actually gets through the wall of self-criticism.
