Interviews

Interview with Kristian Ranta (guitar) by Jan F. Lindsø

Norther started out in 1996. They released their debut "Dream Of Endless War" in 2002. We`ve talked with Kride, which got a pretty hectic concert-summer to look forward to, about their newest release "Mirror Of Madness", touring and much more.
-The response has been really good so far, Kride answers when I ask him how the response upon "Mirror Of Madness" have been; We have got really good reviews here in Finland mostly like 4/5 and 8-9/10, so we are really satisfied with that. The feedback with Mirror of Madness has been way better than with DOEW.

The cover design and the title of the record (Mirror Of Madness) is special and interesting. Can you tell me the meaning of the cover and title?

-Well, the cover is a picture of finnish archipelago (=a lot of islands near the coast) in the winter. It represents the cold feeling what we have in our music (at least we hope we do)
The title represent the idea of the CD (the back side) being the mirror of our madness, heheheh!

The cover on "Dreams Of Endless War" was very dark, but the cover on "Mirror Of Madness" is almost plain white. Even your website changed colours. Why?

-We wanted to have a fresh look with MoM, I think that MoM is a lot brighter and colder record so that's the reason for this white look.

I've seen that you've been booked for some festivals. What about tours? Are you planning to do a Europe- or/and US-tour soon?

-Hopefully, he says; Nothing is confirmed yet, there have been some discussions of an European tour though.

I've read some of your lyrics, and if I understand right the lyrics are about being depressive, hateful and blackhearted. Where do you get the inspirations? Anything self-experienced?

-Our music is quite melancholic so the lyrics tend to also be quite melancholic… don't actually know why, that's just the way they go. For example when I write lyrics I only come up with this kind of lyrics, guess there's something wrong with me.
There's a lot of self-experienced but also a lot of fiction and drama.

You've been compared to bands like Children Of Bodom many places. What do you think about that? What makes Norther far another band?

-What the hell, Kride suddenly answers; It's good that people compare us with Bodom than with Cannibal Corpse!
This thing has been discussed a lot everywhere so there is nothing new to say… Usually if people listen to our CDs a bit more than just one time they notice that there are a lot of differences with us and Bodom. At least with the new CD MoM, it definitely different from Bodoms material, more straightforward, a lot of piano, slower, colder, more melancholic…bla bla! By the way, Sepultura rules!!!!!!! man….

What is your favourite moment in Norther? Tell us about it...

-There have been many good moments, we had really good time in Astia Studio last year, and full booked clubs are always a blast.

Are you finished with your video to the song "Mirror Of Madness"? How was the result? When will you release it to the masses?

-The video is ready, I think it was sent to some Finnish medias last week, it should be available at our site quite soon, don't know exactly when. Someone has to first do the conversion.

Thanks for the interview Kride! Anything you want to add to the Beat The Blizzard readers?

-You are welcome!
Stay Metal, Rock Like Hell and Kick Ass, at least listen to us!! heheheh..
