Interview with Scythe of Wrathage by Explosion Cerebral
Which is the age of the wrath, the actual one, were the wrath that inspired you to create the band?
Well first of all Wrath never ages, ours started to take musical form somewhere back in 1997, when we saw so many not that interesting bands to get record deals and we knew that we could do better than those.
anNihil[N]ation was your first release, do you think that is your better release ever, why, how many time do you spent recording it?
Yes it was, although a shitload of home studio songs were made prior to that but it's the first proper release. But on the "Best one" question - No. Black light zodiac delivers Wrathage better to the people than anNihil[N]ation although there are some killer tracks on the first one also. We are actually really slow in our recording processes, too much perfectionism so it took about 4 months on/off in the studio to get it finished.
How do you create your music and lyrics, from where do you take your inspiration to create them?
First of all our former vocalist KOBA does all the lyrics nowadays as he is mighty gifted in his words and still wants to be a part of the band that way. Usually me or my twin brother D.V Grim do riffs on ourselves and come together every now and then to compose a song out of them and sometimes we take a riff to the rehearsal and continue to make a killer song out of it with the whole band. One source of Inspiration is the ever increasing, boring and unchallenging music that is made these days - People deserve better! Fortunately there still some some exceptional bands out there, like Dodheimsgard or Thorns, which give inspiration and continue to amaze with every release they make - Everyone, get the coming albums from those bands or we'll all drown in a pool of shit. Of course Wrathage is also a way to let some steam off.
Why did you use corpse paint in the beginning and now not, do you think that the corpse paint was too serious?
Well didn't every one use back at the 90's? It just didn't feel like our thing anymore and perhaps we didn't want to be one of the many doing it but something we are, like in the words of Emperor/Ihsahn "Yes you are indeed the few, I am the one" (Emperor - Curse you all men). Corpse paint can on my opinion be used to enhance the ghoulish appearance of a band and to enrich the illusion of demons on stage, but it is not needed in our case as we don't aim to look dirty and evil - We offer aggression in the means of music with a really interesting approach.
You have released 2 DVD-r, are you satisfied with it, are it a professional DVDs or are more underground ones, will you record anytime a pro video clip?
Both of the videos give a good view of our aggressive live performance from which we've also received some good feedback from the Finnish media. Both of the videos are shot with 2 cameras and with a decent sound quality so at the end of the day - Yes I am satisfied with the outcome. For the quality, well see for yourself:
A proper music video has been under consideration and will probably be made one day, but our main concern at the moment is to get the new material done and released.
How many shows have you done, with what bands have you played, have you toured out of
All of our past live gigs have been shot on video so two. We've decided to skip the school disco phase and concentrate on proper gigs. More gigs are to be made once we get our new material out. Of the bands that we've played with, well Deathbound and Dismember we're with us on the first gig we ever played and the Jalometalli Metal festival had headliners such as Dissection, Entombed and Exmortem.
What do you know of
You are also involved in other bands, how do you do to have time to other bands, are that bands of different styles that Wrathage?
Well Kusmin Plays in Kalmah, D.V Grim graduated as a professional musician so he has to make a living out of it, but we have enough time for Wrathage and to me it has always been THE band. There has been all kinds of metal bands in the past but nothing that big and worth of mentioning.
Why was not released your EP “As
We didn't for some reason finish the songs, we almost did it, but something else always seemed to take the time of from that project. But as I am writing this I've already been doing some home studio versions of the As night falls songs and they will probably be a part of the next Wrathage release, only played properly this time and done in a much more interesting way.
“Black light Zodiac” is your last release, which is the answer of the media, how is the distribution; do you think that your style is more death now?
We don't want to stick to any category, as long as it's extreme and interesting we're doing it and don't mind whether someone might dislike our choices. Most of all Wrathage is a thing for ourselves, done as we please and not aimed for the masses. Black light zodiac received really good feedback from all over the globe and especially in the Finnish media. It's a self financed and distributed recording that hopefully will be our last one that way and the next one can have proper channels in reaching you metal heads out there.
Which is your opinion about Satanism and Christianity, do you think that ever will exist because they need one to the other?
Yes.
What do you think about NSBM and their political ideas, do you think that a race is superior to other, why?
Man I must be gettin' old since I've also run into this NSBM term before but found out the meaning of it only now after a short googling. Wrathage ain't politics, Wrathage is metal.
Any future plans?
Yes, the next Wrathage release is on the "home studio demo version" -phase and some tracks might be made available for download soon, but we'll start to record songs properly during this Autumn and hope for a late 2006 / Early 2007 release.
Any last comment?
