Interview with Eniac

Scorngrain is one of the most promising upcoming finnish thrash metal bands. Bands original and unique way to combine machines into their thrash metal sound first time astonished critikers in 2004 when bands "Cyberwarmachine" saw the daylight. The band gained a lot of positive feedback and now after two years of touring in Scandinavia the band is ready to do another Cyber wave, this time an album titled "0,05%". We shared a few words with the bands drummer Eniac about the bands early steps as well as his thoughts about the new "0,05%" album. Here´s our chat with him:

At first, could you please introduce yourself and your band for the readers?

Eniac: My name is E and I am the drummer in Scorngrain. Other members are B.B.Enema in vocals, dr.Mike and A.I on guitars and Herman on Bass.

Tell us a little about your band's history, when and where you met and simply how everything happened?

Eniac: History of Scorngrain goes back to the year 2000 when I and dr.Mike met. We started to make some riffs and we had this thought that later became our, should we call it trademark. That thought was to mix two music styles that are like almost opposite to each other, Hard pounding thrash metal and light danceable techno music. From the start we knew that those two styles were quite hard to combine and that is why we started adding elements from industrial music. When had two or three songs ready we thought that this something new and interesting so had to look for singer or in our case some guy who could make noises with his mouth. Dr.Mike said to me that there was a guy in Joensuu who was just right to our little project. His name is B.B.Enema (formerly known as 29A) which was singing in two other bands Arrival and Flauros. Dr.Mike asked B.B. to join us and he was in the game from the day we asked him. In the early months of 2001 we recorded our first and only demo and our recorder Herman joined later to Scorngrain, first as a session player and now he is a full member. After that we send our demo to record labels but nobody did show any interest towards Scorngrain. Then we took part in demo contest in internet and from there our current record label found us. Soon after that we had enough songs to record a full length album. We went to studio and in spring 2004 we released our debut album “cyberwarmachine”. When it was time to do some live shows we thought that one guitar was not enough to build that kind of wall which you can hear from our record so we asked A.I to join Scorngrains live line- up. After a year of doing gigs A.I became also a full member of SG- legion. Now in year 2006 it´s time for the second coming.

How did you end up with a name 'Scorngrain'? Does the name have a meaning to you guys?

Eniac: I had that name idea for a long, long time before the band, but I did not have any use for that kind of name. In the early days we started thinking what should we call us, then the name Scorngrain came up and we all thought that it sounded and looked cool. We have no deeper meaning towards this name, but we thought that Scorn means that you make a fool of somebody else and have no respect towards that fool and opinions are like seeds or Grain, so “ As ye sow, so shall ye reap.”

You guys will release your new album titled '0,05%' through Dynamic Arts
Records on October. How was the recording process of the album? Was it all
easy or did you had hard times in studio?

Eniac: The recording of 0,05% was quite easy and we had a great time during those days in studio. You can see and feel the wibes when you watch the “making of” – video, which is on that album as bonus. When we mixed and mastered our new album. we had some minor difficulties but there was not a problem that we could not solve. We used the same studio and same recorder/engineer as we used in “cyberwarmachine”. We wanted to do this new album in a familiar environment because we wanted to save as much time as possible to the actual recording.

Tell us about the new album. What kind of material can we expect to hear from it?

Eniac: You can expect hard thrashy riffs with heavy pounding drumbeats combined with shredding vocals and weird loops. So if you are interested from listening something else than average metal banging and you are looking for something new then this album is made for you.

What are your personal expectations towards the record?

Eniac: Hopefully we can reach as much new listeners and we could get some feedback from them, in good and also in bad. And secondly we expect reactions from the audience. Nothing is worse than a listeners comment: “it was Ok” or something like that. If you love it great!, and If you hate it that is also great, because “no reaction is bad reaction”.

How does the new album '0,05%' differ from your previous album
'Cyberwarmachine'?

Eniac: This new album is much darker and colder compared to our debut album. Also it is more melodic since we wrote “Cyberwarmachine” for one guitar. Now we have two guitarists and that thing alone gave us possibilities to expand our music.

Your future plans after releasing the album. Are you going to do any
shows abroad Finland? When?

Eniac: First we gather up to rehearse our live set and then we try to do as much live shows as possible. Plans to go abroad are still open, but hopefully we could have that chance too.

What´s the most memorable performance to you guys so far? Tell us a bit
about it.

Eniac: The most memorable performance was Petrozavodsk, Russia. We had difficulties in almost everything that you can imagine. At start my name was forgotten from the group visa list, so we had to get that before I could leave out of the country. It was Tuesday when I heard this and we managed to reach a Russian consulate for my visa but that should 2 to 3 days to get that. The transportation was planned to leave on Thursday and I got my visa on Friday so I had to get there with different transportation than the rest of the band. When all that was in order, I stayed in Finland to wait my visa and ride and all others wished me good luck. Our gig was schedule on Saturday, so there was time to Petrozavodsk. My Transportation vehicle came about eight hours late and I was quite concerned about the situation. By luckily all went well and quite late in Friday evening I was at our hotel in Petrozavodsk. At first when I saw all the members of our band we felt relieved. Soon after that, they took me to a bar, and we got heavily drunk. Next day was Saturday and we went to do our sound- check. It delayed a little bit because they suspected that some- one had but a bomb in that Sport center where the festival was held. Luckily there were no bomb and the rest of the day went without problems. The gig itself was great. There were about 1800 Russians banging heads and shaking fists, but the funny thing was that most of them have never heard of us. But still they supported us and that was very different thing compared to Finnish audience. They came to listen music and have fun and not to judge and show your “Rock Police” badge.

In the end I like to take a sneak peak to your playing list. What kind of
music kicks the most ass in Scorngrain camp?

Eniac: I don´t know about others but my play list is quite empty right now. Unfortunately I haven´ t had the time to listen music. I Listen radio in my car and at home I watch TV. In past few week I very rarely look for some certain album and listen to it. There are some records that are always on my play list: Sodom: Agent orange, Slayer: reign in blood, Entombed: first three albums. Then some Ministry albums.

Thank you very much for taking time off to do this interview with us.
Any greetings to your fans all around the globe?

Eniac: Hopefully we´ ll see you some where, but in a meantime go to www.scorngrain.com and download our single from our new album, cheers!!!!
