Waltari Drummer "Mika Jaervelaeinen" Interviewed For jÖrG

Hello new drummer, nice to meet you. Who are you?

Mika Jaervelaeinen, 28.

Where do you live in Finland?

I come from a small 25 000 thousand inhabitants town Iisalmi that is located in the Central Finland. (Note: it´s nearly 500 km distance from Helsinki)

You are the new Waltari drummer. When did you start drumming?

I had my own real drums at the age of 12. Before that I used all kinds of pots and kettles.

Do you have role models, who is your favourite drummer?

Absolutely number 1 all time favorite is Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Another idol is Terry Bazzio, who is a fantastic all-around-drummer, he can play anything. Plus many other great names. Favorite bands there are a lot, I like many different styles in music. Led Zeppelin and Toto for example.

You played in other bands before Waltari for sure, please tell us about them.

I´ve played in many smaller bands representing a wide range of musical styles. In addition to Waltari I´m also at the moment occupied in a group that plays old-style dance music and has a lot of gigs.

Many finnish musicians play more than one instrument, do you play more than drums?

No, I don´t play any other instrument.

How did you come from Iisalmi the far way to Waltari in Helsinki?

I heard from a friend of mine that Waltari is looking for a new drummer and decided to give it a try. Travelled to Helsinki for an audition and things started to roll.

And how do you feel now rehearsing, recording and touring with the band as a new member?

All that has happened with Waltari is totally new to me: style of music, touring, recording. It has been a lot of fun. All the guys in the band are really nice. On tour the atmosphere is easy although playing many gigs in a row is hard work. In the studio it was good feeling although the schedule was tight.

It´s not that simple to join a band like Waltari, isn´t it?

Yes, it was a big challenge to step into Janne´s shoes. Our style to play is very different.

Okay, thank you : )
