Myötuulirock part 2: Mokoma

by Tero Tolkki on 20.06.2007 23:09

Mokoma as a band is relatively new to me. The last time I saw Mokoma was in last November when Mokoma, Stam1na and Rytmihäiriö roamed Finland with their Sakara Tour. Back then I knew very little of their discography and my main interest back then was Stam1na. So many things have changed since that. Now I can say that Mokoma is in my top-5 bands nowadays. So naturally the expectations towards their show in Myötätuulirock was entirely on different level now.

They started their set with "Mene ja tiedä", followed by "Kiellän itseni" and "Valapatto". After that came a very nice surprise cause they played one of my favourites "Kuu saa valtansa auringolta". There is a video of that song available (not from Myötätuuli through). You can watch the video at the end of this review. After "Ärräpää" was time for some new material.

It was actually quite funny cause the vocalist Marko Annala introduced their new song "Nujerra ihminen" like this: "We will release a new album at some point this year...in case any of you is interested. And we were thinking what would be the worst way to market the new album? And decided to play few of them live during the summer festivals and royally fuck the up." Of course I hadn't heard the new songs before but they sounded good to me...so if that was a fucked up version...I can't wait for the real version!

After that came some released material "Haudan takaa" and "Sirppi". Then was a time for a bass solo which clearly Santtu Hämäläinen didn't want to do. But the other band members asked some help from the audience and Santtu ended up playing a very brief "solo". Well it wasn't a solo really...he played a known theme from finnish sportshow called "Urheiluruutu" and that was it. But the audience loved it cause pretty much everyone knows the theme.

Back to business with "Hiljaisuuden julistaja" and after that was a time for another new song. "Entistä ehompi" was clearly a slower song than "Nujerra ihminen" and it sounded awesome! It was slow yet very heavy. If the new material is somewhere between those 2 new songs...the new album is going to be an absolute killer! Horns Up!

The last four songs were "Minä elän!", "Punainen Kukko", "Kasvot kohti itää" and "Pahaa verta" ended the set. One trademark from Mokoma has been that they have usually always played their song "Takatalvi" but not in Myötätuulirock. That would have crowned the show but understandably they might be a bit worn to play this song =) I will include the video of Takatalvi at the end of this review.
