Nightwish and Anette...one more time.

by Tero Tolkki on 13.06.2007 11:22

I must say that the decision of recruiting Anette Olzon came as a total surprise for me. For some reason I was sure it was going to be Vibeke Stene. Even though she had rushed to the media telling the she wouldn't even want to be in Nightwish. But the thing that humoured me was the reactions from the fans. Some even said that "Nightwish is dead for me". Well bye bye then.

What people should realize is that no matter who Nightwish would have chosen as their new vocalist, there still would have been a huge army of negative feedback. Why? It's simple. Cause people are afraid of change. And in fans eyes, this was the biggest change Nightwish could have taken. Vocalists are always the ones owning the spotlight and therefore replacing a vocalist always raises tons of emotions.

Remember when Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden and Blaze Bayley took over in 1994? Or when Rob Halford left Judas Priest and Tim "Ripper" Owens took over? Well that was a bit different since Halford left 1991 and Owens was recruited 1996 but still...how about the Stratovarius episode back in 2003 when both Timo Kotipelto (vocals) and Jörg Michael (drums) left the band? The recruit of MissK (Katriina Wiiala) as the new Stratovarius vocalist raised an unbelievable rage amongst Stratovarius fans.

So in a nutshell one doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that the announcement of new Nightwish vocalist would raise emotions. But was the decision to recruit Anette really a bad one? I personally don't think so. I think Tuomas and guys did an amazing job and at the same time showed the world that they would do what they know is best for the band. Some nasty rumours said that Tarja actually never even left Nightwish and that this whole thing was a huge publicity stunt. I am glad that it wasn't.

"She is nothing like Tarja was", fans cried...well duh...of course she isn't. Like Tuomas has said himself many times "We weren't out to look a new vocalist to be a Tarja clone. Tarja did her thing better than anyone else in this world so it would have been pure madness to try to replace her." I couldn't agree more really. Now they are off to a clean start in every sense of the word.

Marco Hietala is going to get more responsibility in the vocal duties which rules cause I still think that he is one of the best vocalists Finland has. And when it comes to the older songs and playing them live...well...fans are going to hear them newly arranged, fit to Anette's voice. So all in all I think Nightwish fans are for a treat.

All in all I am happy how this turned out. I think Nightwish will come back stronger than ever. Even thought their new song EVA sucked. It's an ok song but not the type of song with which you want to break the silence. If EVA would have been sold as a real cd, they should've given pillows with the single cause it made me wanna sleep...but I have all the faith in the world for Tuomas that he is going to deliver 75 minutes of unforgettable music when their new album hits the stores.
