Biography

SMACK is a Melodic Rock act formed, initially billed as THE LUCKY MONKEYS, in the Finnish capital during 1982 by singer Claude, guitarists Kartsa and Manchuria and bass player Cheri. The band gained cult status, mainly based upon live shows in California, inspiring even NIRVANA to cover their track 'Run Rabbit Run'.

Their debut concert in 1983, with Juki Marjala manning the drums, garnered the group a deal with Cityboy Records. Rebranded as SMACK the group opened shows for HANOI ROCKS in January 1984 and issued their first single, 'Criminal', that April. That June the eighteen year old Kinde took over the drum position.

SMACK's opening album, 'Smack On You' released in September 1984, was produced by T.T. Oksala. Rane then replaced Kartsa and played guitar on the second album, 'Rattlesnake Bite', again seeing T.T. Oksala behind the desk and released in the autumn of 1985. Jimi Zero replaced Cheri to play bass on the third album, 'Live Desire', released in 1986. French label High Dragon gave the album a mainland European license.

'Salvation', recorded in London and released in 1987, was the band's major label debut for CBS Records. This record gave SMACK a number 2 on the national Finnish charts. A compilation of archive singles and album tracks, entitled 'State Of Independence', then followed.

For the first time, SMACK took on a nre producer, Pave Maijanen, for their next outing, 1988's 'Radical'. However, the band was to fracture, with Claude, Rane and Manchuria relocating to Los Angeles in June 1989. With Repa on drums SMACK drafted Ulan Bator, a.k.a. Sam Yaffa of HANOI ROCKS and JETBOY under a pseudonym, on bass to cut demo tracks. An EP was intended for a December 1989 date but this never transpired. In 1992, the 'Salvation' and 'Radical' material was were re-released on one CD with bonus tracks 'Can You Dig It' and 'Crazy River' culled from the aborted EP sessions.

In July 1990 Claude returned to Finland and duly went on to form THE FISHFACES. He released the album 'Love Songs For Hyenas' in 1993. Tragically, on September 22nd 1996, Claude died of heart failure. 'Leaving The Planet', a posthumous THE FISHFACES record, was released in 1998.

Kinde forged JIMSONWEED.
